How do I tell Africanized bees from regular honey bees?
Visually you can't — they look identical. Behaviorally they're very different: Africanized bees are extremely defensive, attack in larger numbers, pursue intruders much farther (a quarter mile or more), and react to lower thresholds of disturbance. In Yuma, treat any established colony in or near your home as Africanized and call a professional.

Is it ever safe to approach a swarm or hive?
No. Established hives in walls, palm trees, or utility boxes warrant a professional every time. A landed swarm (the cluster you sometimes see hanging on a tree branch for a day) is sometimes less defensive — but in Yuma the safe assumption is still don't approach and call us. What's the difference between hive removal and just exterminating?

How do I tell paper wasps from yellowjackets?
Paper wasps: longer body, dangling legs in flight, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves with visible hexagonal cells. Yellowjackets: shorter, stockier, faster flight, nests usually hidden in wall voids or underground (you'll see workers entering and exiting one spot). Yellowjackets are much more aggressive — treat them as a higher-priority removal.
